What is Total Organic Carbon?

Total organic carbon (TOC) measurement is a well-established technique that provides valuable information about water quality for process control and regulatory compliance. Though high-temperature combustion TOC has been shown to be very effective for the analysis of samples that are of high molecular weight or contain substantial amounts of salt or difficult-to oxidize organics (e.g, humic acid), these types of samples are problematic for combustion TOC analyzers.

The 9210p is fully compliant with USEPA Method 415.3 and SM 5310C. It combines the robust heated persulfate oxidation method with a patented, solid-state infrared detection technology for unparalleled accuracy and precision across a range of 50 ppb to 250 ppm.

Engineered for operation in process environments, the 9210p requires no external gases, minimal preventative maintenance, and uses standard reagents. Calibration is typically stable for 12 months.

Do you need a combustion Analyzer?

The 1080 TOC Analyzer processes aqueous samples for analysis of the total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) content. Supporting USEPA-approved methods, Standard Methods, ASTM, DIN/ISO/CEN, and EU Methods our 1080 can analyze up to 300 samples per 24-hour period, depending upon the protocol employed, in excess of 100,000 samples per year. Principal applications include wastewater, seawater, industrial process water, drinking water, groundwater, and cooling water.

The 1080 TOC Analyzer also supports other analytical approaches — including TC, TOC by subtraction (TC-TIC), and simultaneous determination of total bound nitrogen (TNb) using the optional TNb analysis module.

Or, do you need higher sensitivity? 

The Aurora 1030W TOC Analyzer uses the proven heated persulfate wet oxidation technique to analyze organic contamination levels in liquid samples. The instrument can be programmed and calibrated to analyze samples containing organic carbon at levels as low as 10 ppb and as high as 30,000 ppm. In addition to its wide range, the Aurora 1030W has an extremely high daily throughput. Up to 300 samples can be analyzed in a 24-hour period (dependent on method and application).

The reaction chamber of the Aurora 1030W is thoroughly rinsed between analyses to eliminate residue from the previous sample. This ensures the Aurora 1030W maintains the low system background necessary for high sensitivity TOC measurements. This contrasts with combustion TOC analyzers in which residual salts accumulate on catalyst surfaces, degrading oxidation efficiency and causing higher blanks and background contamination.

The Aurora 1030W TOC Analyzer is ideal for the following applications: drinking water, pharmaceutical cleaning validation, municipal wastewater, groundwater/surface water, process water, boiler feed water and condensate, metal plating solutions, and ultrapure water.

What is Heated Persulfate Wet Oxidation?

The heated persulfate oxidation technique has been approved and adopted in numerous regulatory compliance methods, standards, and norms for water quality testing, including Standard Method 5310C, USEPA 415.3, USP <643> / EU 2.2.44, ASTM D 4779 and 4839, USEPA-DBPR, USEPA-SPCC, ISO 8245, and EN 1484.

What is High-Temperature Combustion?

High temperature (680 °C) catalytic combustion is most effective for samples containing high molecular weight, difficult-to-oxidize organics (e.g.; humic acid) at levels > 500 ppb C. Our patented two-chamber combustion tube of the 1030D contains a bed of quartz in the first chamber to protect platinum catalyst in the second chamber from the deposition of non-combustible constituents. This design extends catalyst life, ensures consistent oxidation conditions, and reduces instrument maintenance costs.

The 1088 Rotary AutoSampler supports a number of special functions to address a range of sample conditions and analysis requirements. Onboard magnetic stirring ensures samples containing insoluble components or particles are homogeneous for sampling and accurate analysis. Septum piercing provides closed vial sampling to prevent contamination of the sample. System configuration for sample pretreatment allows pre-acidification and purging of samples within the 1088 prior to sampling. This technique removes the total inorganic carbon (TIC) content of samples, reducing the analysis time required for TOC measurements. A user-programmable number of rinses are used to clean the sample needle before the next vial is sampled.
